Plastic Camera Show at Rayko Photo

Our own Jan Watten will be exhibiting in the Plastic Camera Show
RayKo Photo Center

And here’s a bit that the SFWEEKLY wrote about the show to entice you to get a cheap plastic camera and work some magic:
Most of our smartphones contain digital cameras that rival the best that money could buy less than a decade ago. We often pay hundreds of dollars for these devices. And what do we do with them? Filter our 8-megapixel masterpieces through apps such as Hipstamatic and Instagram, to lend that elusive “shitty camera” sheen of yesteryear’s cheap point-and-click models. It makes a persuasive case for Devo’s grand theory of devolution — as a race, we’re going backward. But whether the trend toward faux-distressed photos with blown-out colors is mindless fun or the worst kind of kitsch, the results definitely lack the authentic charm of photos taken with a real, bottom-shelf, analog camera. Said cameras are becoming harder to find, but RayKo gallery director Ann Jastrab must have a secret stash, which she dispatched for “the International Juried Plastic Camera Show,” an exhibition of “the best images from the worst cameras.” From a slew of entries, RayKo curated 100 photos taken by professionals such as Robert Holmgren, proving that a talented photographer can capture an indelible image using any lens, and that no sophisticated image-processing algorithm can match the warm, serendipitous imperfection of analog.

6th Annual Holiday Art Walk December Sat. & Sun. 3 & 4 11-6

The Jingletown Arts & Business Community announces the 6th Annual Holiday Art Walk,
Saturday and Sunday, December 3 & 4, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

An opening reception will kick off the Holiday ArtWalk on
Friday, December 2, 6:00 to 9:00 pm at
420 Gallery, 420 Peterson Street, between Ford and Glascock Streets,
Oakland, 94601.

The reception and weekend open studios event are free and open to the public.

The annual holiday open studios in this thriving arts district
will highlight the work of artists who
live and/or work in the area known as Jingletown, which is situated
 between the Park and Fruitvale
Street bridges adjacent to the Oakland Estuary.

Among other notable artistic enterprises, it is the location of the
Institute of Mosaic Art, as well as
studios of many other renowned artists who are living and working in
 one of the most recognized
artist warehouse districts in Oakland.

Jingletown got its name from Portuguese cannery workers whose earnings
 would "jingle" in
their pockets at the end of the day as they walked home from the factories in the area. As time
went on the neighborhood went into disuse, but in the early 1980’s artists
 realized the potential
and converted many of the neglected warehouses into functioning live/work spaces.
It is now a
flourishing artist community and one of the fastest growing arts districts
in the Bay Area.

The goal of the Jingletown Arts and Business Community is to heighten
 awareness about the
rich and diverse population of working and exhibiting artists in the neighborhood,
and to promote
creative opportunities in the Jingletown Arts District. Visitors to this historic arts district
 will see
colorful mosaic murals on converted warehouse walls, intersection
street painting art and the
Peterson Street Community Wall, a work in progress which features
murals by many of the
residents of Jingletown.

For a complete listing of Jingletown artists, businesses and upcoming
 events in the area, please
