Peterson St. Art Wall and Garden Project, 2009-Present:

Jill McLennan and Cynthia Elliott designed the project, received fiscal sponsorship from Pro Arts Gallery, and monetary support from the City of Oakland District 5, Neighborhood Beautification Grant.  McLennan directed 16 local artists in completing murals and mosaics along the wall.  The culminating mural, “Sausal Creek to Fruitvale Ave.”, was designed and painted by students from Arise High School under the direction of McLennan and the Cultural Funding Program 2012.  Jill McLennan and the students from Arise High School designed and painted a mural depicting Sausal Creek transforming into Fruitvale Ave and the school campus.  The students chose to include Aztec Insects as symbols of themselves and the local culture of the area.  The 2000 square feet of murals and mosaics and a 2000 square foot native plant gardens brings joy to the neighborhood through the creation of beautiful space to appreciate for years to come.

Jingletown Arts, Businesses & Community, (JABC) the neighborhood association, has adopted, cleaned, maintained and adorned with murals, four storm drains around the neighborhood. There are 38 total drains around the 4x4 block radius of Jingletown Junction, a neighborhood built on what was once the wetlands where Sausal Creek ran into the Estuary.   We will educate neighbors about the importance of keeping storm drains clean to prevent flooding and reduce pollution.  The project leaders are Jill McLennan and Cynthia Elliott and they are working in partnership with the Friends of Sausal Creek (FOSC) and other local schools, senior centers and neighborhood volunteers.  The project received funding from Keep Oakland Beautiful and the Mayor’s office of the city of Oakland.
